Get ready to say ‘I do’ to the perfect mother of the bride outfit!

With (hopefully) clear skies and warm weather, summer is the perfect time to get married. And while there are plenty of advice and style tips for the bride and even the bridesmaids, the mother of the bride can often be overlooked! While all eyes will most certainly be on the bride, the mother of the bride can also find herself centre of attention; catching up with friends, family and the new in- laws!

So, how does the mother of the bride choose the perfect outfit for her daughter’s big day?

Well, firstly speak with the bride and groom and get a feel for how formal or informal they want their day to be. They may want to create a relaxed atmosphere, in which case, you will feel overdressed wearing a full-length cocktail dress. You will also want to be practical, while we hope for great weather the day may be dogged by rain or even a chill in the air. In which case, consider adding a structured jacket in an on-trend colour to your outfit choice. Alternatively, a pashmina is stylish way to wrap up and easy to carry if not needed.

Some brides and grooms specify a colour scheme in their wedding invites. If you are working with a particular colour scheme, then try to work it into your outfit in some way. Choosing a shade or two lighter or darker shows you have listened to the bride and groom but also means that you won’t end up feeling like a spare bridesmaid!

To ensure you look elegant and sophisticated, do ensure you take time to pamper yourself. Behind the scenes a wedding day is often frantic and as mother of the bride you may find yourself tasked with everything from ensuring the bride eats something to taking care of grandchildren. However, you will want to look and feel your best so ensure you take time to get your hair, nails and make-up done.

Of course, the key to any outfit is to get the basics right and that means lingerie. The right lingerie will support, shape and flatter every body shape; ensuring clothes fit better and hang properly. If you are opting for a dress with a low neckline, choose a balconnet style bra, such as Soiree from Prima Donna. The blend of nude and vibrant pink is fashion-forward and perfect for summer while the Swarovski stones add a touch of glamour. Balconnet bras are often a perfect choice for special occasions as the cut and fit make them wearable with clothing with deep V-necks. Also, choose briefs that minimise visible panty line such as the Soiree G-string. Alternatively, the Dressing Floral culotte briefs from Lise Charmel could help ensure you are VPL free!

While a touch of self-tanner can work wonders on giving you a youthful glow, hosiery may well be an easier choice if you are worried about tan lines. Levante Solaire eight denier tights in natural are perfect at adding a touch of leg colour and will not feel too hot if the weather heats up. If you are opting for tights or stockings, consider your footwear, peep toe heels or sandals tend not to work well with tights.
